It looks like the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a one-year deal with often-injured free agent Troy Glaus. The deal will be for around $2 million plus incentives. Because the holidays are so close this deal will not be confirmed till early in 2010 as Glaus has to pass a physical.
The Braves have future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones at third base, so this means they would move Glaus from the hot corner to first base. Glaus played only two games at first base for the Cardinals in 2009, when he missed most of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He hit .172 in only 14 games. Glaus has bounced around the past several years after having a real nice career with the Angels. He had some monster years in Anaheim and led the league with 47 homers in 2000. The 4-time All Star helped lead the Angels to the 2002 World Series win over my Giants, when he won the Series MVP Award. I hated Glaus back then as he scared me every time he came to the plate against my club. He always hit the ball so damn hard!
I remember seeing Glaus for the first time during spring training in the 1990’s during a game in Peoria, Arizona. It was his first big league camp and he scared the Hell out of me every time he came to the plate when I was shooting from third base. The photo pits in spring training are so close to home plate that we come close to getting smoked with line drives all the time. Glaus was a dead pull hitter and hit some screaming fouls down the left field line. I could tell he was going to be a good one.
Over the past several years Glaus has seemed to become so stiff and broken down. For the Braves sake I hope he can put his injuries behind him and have a nice season- but I don’t know. In his last full season in 2008 with the Cards he put up some decent power numbers, with 27 homers and 99 runs batted in. I am sure the Braves would be thrilled with that in 2010. I think he’s done.
