The Hot Stove League is heating up at Baseball’s Winter Meetings in Indianapolis and the New York Yankees are not wasting any time defending their recent World Series victory as they have swung a blockbuster deal to land Detroit Tigers center fielder and lead off man Curtis Granderson in the three team trade with the Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Granderson has been one of my favorite players to watch during his days with the Tigers. I really like his game and he seems like a real good kid, raised by parents who are both school teachers. Granderson has that rare combination of power and speed as he hit 30 homers last year and stole 20 bases. His left handed hitting stroke will love hitting into that jet stream to right field at the new Yankee Stadium.
If I was a Yankee fan I would love this deal. The Yanks are sending top outfield prospect Austin Jackson and reliever Phil Coke to Detroit, plus pitching prospect Ian Kennedy to Arizona, in order to land Granderson from Detroit. The Diamondbacks will wind up with the two pitchers, Edwin Jackson and Kennedy, while the Tigers will get Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Austin Jackson and Coke. The Yankees will be able to plug a potent Granderson into their 2010 line up without giving up very much and Granderson has $25.75 million and three years remaining on his contract, which means the Yankees have him locked up for many years to come.
It is fun to follow the action at the Winter Meetings and things are really starting to heat up. There will be much more action in the next few days as free agents are signed and more trades are made. The Hot Stove League is burning up!
