Yes, I know. This post is a few months late. The San Francisco Giants received their 2014 World Series Championship rings on Saturday night, April 18, before a night game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. I was there on assignment for Major League Baseball Photos. It was a fun night, and very exciting to be on the field for the pre-game ceremony. I was pretty happy with the photographs I got that night, and it was fun to edit and caption them. However, the Giants were in the middle of an eight game losing streak and playing just awful. It didn’t feel right sharing pictures from such a happy occasion when the team sucked so bad. Quite frankly, it was embarrassing. Now that we are into early June and the club made it to their semi-annual White House visit a few days ago above .500 I felt it was time to dust off this set of pictures and let everyone see them. I still like them!

I shot the Giants ring ceremony from the field two years ago in 2013 so I had an idea what to expect this year. That was a HUGE help as I had a plan of attack of the pictures I wanted to get during the fast-moving ceremony. One factor we had to deal with this year was a 6:05pm first pitch, meaning the sun would be setting behind the roof of AT&T Park during the ceremony (scheduled to start around 5:15pm), causing a shadow to move across the infield. This made for some tricky lighting situations, but it also made for some very pretty backlight.

Pre-game ceremonies are pretty awful to photograph if you do not have field access. On opening day I pretty much refuse to shoot because I can’t get any pictures. All I see are television and still photographers doing their jobs, and many (too many) frauds in the way standing around and getting in the way. I ran into the same problem with my special access on this night. Even though I was on the field it was still too crowded and super hard getting a clean view of many of the scenes I wanted to shoot. This is why I abandoned the main area around home plate and wandered around on my own to try and make a few pictures I liked. Adding to all of this was knowing that I was one of the people in the way blocking the poor shooters not on the field who couldn’t see anything.

One great photo opportunity I completely whiffed on two years ago was the National Anthem. This is when the players pause for roughly one minute and forty seconds holding their caps over their hearts while proudly showing off their shiny new World Series rings. This year I was determined to assess the situation quickly and make my way around, depending on the light and how crowded things were, so I could grab a few frames I liked. I think I did a pretty good job. You can see the results at the top of this post (Matt Duffy) and below.

As I write this post the Giants are on the road in Philadelphia, and playing pretty good baseball with a 31-25 record. I find it incredibly hard to believe that I am now a veteran of photographing multiple San Francisco Giants World Series ring ceremonies- from both on and off the field! These last five years have truly been an incredible life experience. I am so fortunate to have been able to photograph this team during so many of their great moments. I hope you like my pictures Giants fans!
