The Pittsburgh Pirates have bolstered their relief corps this afternoon by signing free agent right-hander Octavio Dotel to a one year deal worth $3 million. The 36-year-old hurler earned $6 million last season with the White Sox where he went 3-3 and posted a 3.32 ERA.

Dotel will be the Pirates closer in 2010 and will hope to pitch as well as he did back in 2004 when I shot him as the A’s closer. Dotel had a decent run in Oakland, going 6-2 and nailing down 22 saves. Dotel has always been fun to photograph as his stylish delivery is very photogenic. He also shows so much great emotion on the mound. He made many great pictures for us during his short stay in Oakland (see below).

Pittsburgh should be a good place for Dotel to resurrect his career. The team is bad so there will not be much pressure on him to pitch well in the beginning of the season. If he gets on a roll he could end up as one of the best bargains of the Winter.
